Ninth grader found dead in Dhaka home, family claims suicide

A ninth grader has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at a residence in Dhaka’s Banasree area on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as 16-year-old Mosammat Mahiba, reports Bangla Tribune. 

Family members took the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by family members, where doctors pronounced her dead. 

Mahiba’s family, who live in Barisal, said she was staying with her maternal uncle and his family in Dhaka. She was sent there for better education.

The family also claimed that Mahiba committed suicide because she did not like studying, reports Bangla Tribune.

Abdur Rahman, Mahiba’s uncle said: “Mahiba was sent to Dhaka a few months ago, as she was not attentive towards her studies. She was going well for the last couple of months but hung herself at night (Sunday).”

Officer-in-Charge of DMCH police outpost told Bangla Tribune that the body was kept in the hospital morgue. 

“We have heard that she committed suicide, but we don’t know the reason yet,” he added.

According to a survey, as many as 45 students committed suicide on an average per month this year showing a worrying trend of the vulnerable mental condition of Bangladesh’s future generation.

From January to August of 2022, a total of 364 students killed themselves, Anchal Foundation said.

Dhaka, the capital, ranks first in terms of suicide. In the last eight months, 25.27% of students committed suicide here.

Suicide rates among primary and high school students are the highest. A total of 194 students, which amounts to 53.3% of school-goers, committed suicide. 

Female students continue to outnumber males in suicides, accounting for 60.71% of all suicides, or 221 people.
