A legal case has been filed against seven individuals, including the Managing Director of Labaid Specialized Hospital, Dr AM Shamim, following the death of a teenager, Tahsin Hossain, due to alleged medical negligence.
The case was registered on Monday by the late teenager's father, Monir Hossain, in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Farah Diba Chhanda, confirmed the plaintiff's lawyer, Tanveer Ahmed Sajib.
The other accused are Surgeon Dr Md Saifullah, Assistant surgeons Dr Maksud, Dr Sabbir Ahmed, Dr Mosharraf, Dr Konok, and Branch Manager Md Shahjahan.
The court accepted the complaint as an official allegation and ordered Dhanmondi model police station officer-in-charge to investigate the case.
According to the plaintiff, his son had been feeling unwell for some days and was shown to Dr Saifullah at Labaid on March 27.
The doctor immediately advised hospitalization and diagnosed the patient with an obstructive small gut, which caused abdominal pain and inability to defecate.
An urgent surgery was recommended and performed on March 28.
Following the surgery, Tahsin's condition continued to deteriorate. Upon inquiry, Dr Maksud informed the plaintiff that the surgery had not been successful and a second operation would be necessary.
Dr Saifullah performed the second surgery on April 6. However, the teenager's condition kept worsening, and after three long months of treatment, Tahsin passed away on June 23.
During this period, he was given 144 bags of blood, and the hospital charged approximately Tk27 lakh for the treatment, out of which Tk10,65,000 was paid to secure the release of his body for burial.
Monir Hossain expressed his anguish by saying: "I asked Dr Saifullah numerous times about my son's problem, but he never provided a clear answer. Yet, two surgeries were conducted. I am certain that they treated my son incorrectly. I even wanted to take my son to India for treatment after the first surgery, but Labaid authorities did not provide the release. Labaid and the doctors have killed my son bit by bit in the name of treatment. I demand justice for this act of murder. I don't want any other mother to bear this pain."
