Minister: Dhaka home to 21 million people

Local Government and Rural Development Minister Md Tajul Islam said some 21 million people live in Dhaka.

“All of them take services from Wasa. However, some 3,87,000 people are meter-based customers,” he said while replying to a question by Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim at the parliament on Thursday.

Tajul Islam added that the daily water demand in Dhaka is 2,100-2,600 million litres depending on the season. “Daily water production capacity of Dhaka Wasa is 2,750-2,800 crore litres.”

While replying to lawmaker Didarul Alam, lawmaker from Chittagong-4, Md Tajul Islam said that currently the length of paved roads in the whole country is 140,699km and the length of unpaved roads is 212,653km.

He said the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has set a target of paving a total of 353,352 kilometers of roads across Bangladesh.

Referring to the ongoing process of paving unpaved roads, Tajul Islam emphasized that the allocation of funds determines the pace at which these roads are being paved, taking into account their significance and priority.
