5 get death penalty for murder of police officer

A Dhaka court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced five people to death in a case lodged over the murder of police constable Badal Miah in the capital's Motijheel area in 2013. 

Dhaka Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tehsin Iftekhar delivered the judgement and also fined them Tk1 lakh each. 

The five death row convicts are Ripon Nath Ghosh, Bishwajit Chandra Das, Ibrahim Khalil alias Kosai Khalil, Ratan Chandra Das and Humayun Kabir.

The court also sentenced each of them to seven years in prison under another section for their involvement in hiding the body. 

Of the five convicts, Bishwajit, Ibrahim and Ratan were present during the pronouncement of the judgment and were sent to jail with conviction warrants. 

According to the case documents, the police recovered the unidentified body of a man from the T&T Colony area in Motijheel on February 22, 2013. Later it was identified as police constable Badal Miah. Motijheel police station Sub-Inspector Abdul Latif filed a case over the incident.
