Expressing concern over the huge loss caused by Tuesday's fire at Bangabazar in Old Dhaka, senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed the incident mysterious and puzzling.
“There has been no proper investigation into or remedy for such incidents under this government. People's lives have no value… The government has failed to prevent these incidents,” the BNP secretary general said in a statement sent to the media.
Mirza Fakhrul then demanded a fair and impartial probe into all fires, including the one at Bangabazar, before calling on the government to compensate those affected by such occurrences.
The devastating fire broke out at the market around 6:10am and soon burned it to the ground.
It had been 16 hours since the blaze engulfed the market and 48 firefighting units were still making frantic efforts to douse it, fire service duty officer Md Ershad told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday night.
