College teacher harassed by ‘police officer’ for wearing bindi

A teacher of the Tejgaon College in Dhaka has allegedly been harassed and threatened to be killed by a man in police uniform for wearing a bindi, a decorative mark worn in the middle of the forehead by women in the Indian subcontinent.

Lota Sumaddaer, a Theatre and Media Studies lecturer, filed a complaint over the matter at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on Saturday.

OC Utpal Barua said the teacher could not give the name of the police officer in question, but she did provide registration number on the licence plate of the motorcycle, which is being looked into.

Lota said in her complaint she has been feeling unsafe since the incident. “I was threatened when I protested his verbal abuse,” it reads.

According to the complaint, a police officer on a parked motorcycle harassed Lota for wearing a bindi near the Tejgaon College at Farmgate on Saturday morning.

He also tried to run her over with his bike when she protested. Lota saved herself by quickly moving aside, but sustained some injuries as she fell on the street, says the complaint filed with police.
