In response to the attack on two of its leaders, Imran H Sarker and Sonaton Ullash, Gonojagoron Moncho has decided to hold a protest rally.
In a press release sent out by Gonojagoron Moncho, the organisation called for a protest rally at 5pm Sunday in Shahbag.
“When a citizen is attacked by armed thugs in front of the police and the courts, this country can no longer be called civilised,” the press release quoted Imran as saying: “The country is now a haven for thugs, terrorists and thieves. These miscreants will be in power and pillage and rape, and no one can say a word against them. When we speak out, they file cases against us, and when we go to the court, they attack us. If people are attacked at the court, how can people respect the power of the judiciary?”
Chhatra League's Education and Curriculum Secretary Golam Rabbani filed a case against the Gonojagoron Moncho for using language that was “critical” of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in their slogan during a protest on May 26.
Imran and Ullash had gone to the court on Sunday to ask for bail, which the court approved. However, as they were leaving the courthouse, they were attacked by Chhatra League members. Imran and other witnesses say that the Chhatra League members pelted stones at Imran and Ullash's car.
However, the complainant, Golam Rabbani claimed that the Chhatra League members had only hurled rotten eggs at Imran's car.
“This Imran H Sarker had previously called the government illegitimate. As long as he does not ask the prime minister for forgiveness, he will be attacked with rotten eggs wherever he goes. Chhatra League members from Jagannath University had only flung rotten eggs at him, they did not physically assault him.”
The Gonojagoron Moncho's press release stated that Imran and other members of the organisation were set on with sticks by members of the Chhatra League. They also claimed that a number of their members were injured by the attack as well.
