Hawker killed over feud on territory in Dhaka

Police have detained a street hawker for allegedly killing another hawker over a feud on occupying additional spaces on a footpath in Dhaka.

The incident took place in Bangabazar area near Babupura police outpost at around 11:30am on Friday.

The deceased was Md Selim, 50, a fruit vendor, from Noakhali. He lived in a slum near Bangabazar.

The suspect is Sultan, 35, who sells sugarcane juice in the same area.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of the police outpost Md Joynal said Selim and Sultan both used to run their businesses on the same footpath.

On Friday morning, they had an argument over occupying more spaces on each other's side and at one stage, Sultan hit Selim in the head with an iron handle of his sugarcane crushing machine.

Critically injured, Selim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead, DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said.

The body has been preserved in the DMC morgue, he added.

Police apprehended Sultan soon after the incident, ASI Joynal said.
