Body of Brac employee found hanging in Dhaka

The body of Sourav Banerjee, communication specialist at Brac’s communications department, has been found hanging at his rented house in Dhaka’s Monipuripara neighbourhood.

Confirming the matter, Tejgaon police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salahuddin Miah said: “We recovered Sourav’s body, which was hanging from the ceiling fan of his living room, around 8pm on Saturday.”

The OC said it looked like a case of suicide. “A post-mortem report will officially determine the cause of death.”

When contacted, Debashish Foni, the deceased’s cousin, said Sourav was at his house with his two children — one around three years old and the other an eight-month-old baby — on Saturday afternoon; his wife was at work.

“After reaching home, she found Sourav’s hanging body around 5:30pm. Police came and brought the body down. The body was later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy,” Debashish added.

Sourav, 36, worked at The Independent, an English Daily, for about six years before moving to Brac. An obituary was issued by Brac late Saturday night.

Sourav’s body was taken to his village home in Natore on Sunday evening for cremation.

A case has been filed with Tejgaon police station over the death.
