Erfan Selim, bodyguard Zahid placed on 2-day remand again

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Erfan Selim, son of Awami League MP Haji Md Selim, and his bodyguard Md Zahid on a two-day remand in a case filed over the assault on a navy officer.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman passed the order confirmed Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Ashraf Ali, general recording officer (GRO) of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka.

Ashraf said: “After the completion of the three-day remand, Detective Branch (DB) of police Sub-Inspector (SI) Mobinul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case filed with Dhanmondi police station, sought a five-day remand for the each of the two on Sunday.”

“The court however granted a two-day remand for each.”

Earlier on October 28, Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur had placed Erfan and Zahid on a three-day remand in the same case.

Earlier on October 25 night, a video of Lieutenant Wasif of Bangladesh Navy screaming for justice before the public after being assaulted by Erfan and a few accomplices went viral on social media.

The attack took place in the Kalabagan bus stop area around 7:45pm, when the military officer protested after his motorcycle was hit by Erfan's car, which had a parliament sticker.

On the morning of October 26, Wasif filed a case over the assault incident with Dhanmondi police station naming four people and several unnamed accused. 

Later that same day, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive at the residence of Awami League leader Haji Selim in Old Dhaka's Lalbagh area and detained his son Erfan and Zahid.

A mobile court led by RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam jailed the lawmaker's son and Zahid for a year each after illegal guns, ammunition, liquor, walkie-talkies, and handcuffs were found during the raid.

According to the case statement, Erfan’s car hit the Navy official’s motorcycle near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm on October 25, when he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.

Later, some people came out of the car and physically assaulted the navy official and verbally abused his wife.

The government on October 27, suspended Erfan from the post of councillor for assaulting the Navy official.
