Parents and guardians of students at Monipur High School and College in Dhaka have continued their demonstrations demanding a reduction of tuition fees.
They have been taking to the streets for several days for a 50% waiver of tuition fees due to the economic hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
They also sat with the authorities over the issue but it is yet to be resolved, the guardians said.
On Saturday, a number of parents and guardians joined a sit-in program blocking the road in front of the institution's Rupnagar branch to realize their demand.
Hannan Talukder, a guardian, said the institution is going to hold the online annual examination (October 29) and asked its students to clear the tuition fees and the examination fees before the tests.
Otherwise, they will not be allowed to take the examinations and thus will not be promoted to the next class, he said.
Some guardians came up with an allegation that those who are leading the demonstrations are being intimidated that their children's admission will be cancelled.
Principal Md Forhad Hossain said they will soon sit with the guardians and the governing body of the institution to resolve the matter.
However, the guardians said if their demand is not met by Saturday, they will start demonstrations by blocking roads in front of all its campuses from Sunday.
Meanwhile, Prof Syed Md Golam Faruk, director general of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, said the education minister will make an announcement within a few days over a guideline on how the educational institutions will collect tuition fees from the students during this pandemic.
On October 21, Education Minister Dipu Moni said the government decided not to hold any annual examinations for secondary school students this year.
The students from grade 6-9 will be assessed through assignments to identify their weaknesses so that teachers can take extra care in the next academic year, she said.
