The Dhaka University (DU) student who has accused the suspended convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council Hasan Al Mamun of raping her, has fallen ill following a fast-unto-death at the university, demanding his arrest along with the five rape abettors accused in a rape case.
She started feeling unwell late on Friday night and thereupon, received primary treatment at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the university campus where she has been continuing the protest.
A team of Dhaka Medical College unit of Chhatra League led by Dr Sheikh Md Al Amin checked her physical condition on Friday night, said Falguni Das Tanni, former assistant general secretary of the university's Ruqayyah Hall.
“Many requested the student to break the hunger strike—but she has been sticking to her decision that she will only do so once all the six accused are arrested,” Falguni said.
It was found during a visit on Saturday morning at the protest site that the reported victim, a postgraduate student of the university’s Islamic Studies department, was lying there on the ground with saline being inserted into her body through a needle.
She, also a member of the student body that Mamun used to lead, started the hunger strike around 8:30pm on Thursday amid the countrywide anti-rape protests being taken place since Monday.
She filed the case against the six individuals — all belonging to the independent student organization, and current and former students of the same university — on September 20 with Lalbagh police station.
A day later, ex-Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur along with six others were detained for an alleged attack on police near Matsya Bhaban in a procession brought out to protest the case. They were released from police custody several hours later.
According to the case dockets, key accused Mamun raped the victim at his house in Old Dhaka’s Lalbagh area on January 3.
The others accused of abetting the crime are VP Nur, Nazmul Hassan Shohag and Md Saiful Islam, joint conveners of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, Nazmul Huda, VP of the organization’s DU unit, and Abdullah Hil Baki, a student of the university and an activist of the organization.
She sued them again on September 21 with Kotwali police station under the Digital Security Act.
Notably, Nur has been joining the anti-rape protests being held at Shahbagh since Monday.
