5 workers injured in steel mill fire at Jatrabari

Five workers have suffered burn injuries -- three of them serious -- while melting iron at a steel mill in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

The incident took place at Shahriar Steel Mills Limited around 12am on Sunday.

The workers were rushed to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, adjacent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where three of them were admitted to the ICU. They are in critical condition, said the institute’s resident physician Dr Partha Shankar Pal.

He said Yaar Hossain, 24, sustained 40% burn injuries, Alamin, 25, 24%, and Jashim sustained 20% burns.

The two others, Didar Hossain and Dunu Bepari, were released after primary treatment.

Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge Majharul Islam said: “We visited the site of the incident and also checked on the burn victims at the hospital. Three of them are undergoing treatment.”

Alamin’s uncle Md Selim said his nephew and the other workers were doing their night duty in the iron mill when flakes from the fire suddenly hit them.

The workers and their families do not have enough money to bear the cost of the treatment. The families urged that the victims should receive proper treatment.

Since last night, the mill authority has been paying the treatment bills. Anisur Rahman, a representative of the mill authority, was present at the hospital. However, he refused to comment on anything.
