Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Wednesday announced that they have decided to ban students celebrating Rag Day inside the campus.
The decision came from a meeting of the Academic Council (AC), chaired by DU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman and attended by more than 300 DU AC members virtually, said a media statement signed by Public Relations Officer Mahmood Alam.
The hand-out said the university decided to impose a ban on “the so called Rag Day” and termed it as an inhuman, cruel and unethical celebration.
When contacted, DU VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune: "Rag itself is a negative word. We don't want our students to be involved with any inhuman deeds or unethical celebration.”
"Our departments and other authorities will organize education completion or farewell programs where students' security will be ensured," he added.
The meeting recommended the formation of an Ethical Review Committee in every faculty.
The meeting also allowed institutes, faculties, departments to hold unfinished examinations and publish results following proper health guidelines and social distancing measures.
Participants also put emphasis on taking fundamental research projects and publishing research works on the occasion of the university's birth centenary and the golden jubilee of Independence.
