A househelp reportedly looted valuables from a house at Dhaka’s Sabujbagh area after knocking off six people of a family by mixing sedatives with their dinner.
“The incident took place at Sabujbagh in Dhaka on Wednesday night,” Sabujbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbub Alam said while confirming the matter on Thursday.
The six victims – Parul Akhter, 40, Selina, 50, Jahanara Begum, 70, Abir, 15, Rumana, 57, and Nafiz, 17 – are now receiving treatment at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital.
“A househelp, identified as a 35-year-old woman named Lima, has been on the run after mixing sedatives with the family’s dinner,” OC Mahbub said.
He, however, could not confirm what the fugitive woman took from the house as all the residents of the house were now at the hospital receiving treatment.
“Everyone in the family is at the hospital. Details of the incident can be known only when they regain their health,” he added.
Police also said no formal complaint has been filed yet over the incident.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Ismail Hasan, a relative of the victims who lives in the same area, said Parul’s mother Suraiya Begum was brought back home on Thursday following a surgery at a hospital.
Later, Parul hired Lima to take care of her sick mother. Unfortunately, Suraiya Begum passed away at noon on Monday, Ismail added.
He also added that relatives of the family came to visit the house following Suraiya’s death. Few relatives also stayed over with the beavered family.
On Wednesday night, Lima brought two other women into the house, identifying one of them as her sister. Later on that night, Lima served food for everyone in the house.
“Anyone who consumed the food on that night fell unconscious,” Ismail added.
After receiving the news, he said the unconscious victims were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after midnight. After performing gastric lavage, the victims were sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital.
“The physical condition of the six victims has been stable,” he added.
