The Detective Branch (DB) of police has handed Regent Hospital owner Shahed Karim, alias Md Shahed, over to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The handover took place on Thursday, as RAB has taken over the investigation into the charges of fraud and irregularities againt Shahed.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Lt Col Ashik Billah, director (legal and media wing) of RAB, said the handover took place following the approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He added that RAB has acquired all necessary documents concerning the case from the Detective Branch, who were previously in charge of the case.
Earlier on Tuesday, a verbal order from the Home Ministry instructed RAB to take over the investigation.
Shahed recently came under spotlight after allegations of his involvement in providing fake Covid-19 certificates and embezzling money from patients surfaced.
RAB raided the Regent Hospital on July 6, and later on filed a case against Shahed and a few others for scamming patients, running the hospital without appropriate licence, and providing fake Covid-19 health certificates.
Shahed was arrested by RAB on the morning of July 15, from the border area of Satkhira district in southwest Bangladesh. They handed him over to the Detective Branch of police on the same day.
