Md Nasir Mridha, sukani (launch staff) of MV Mayur-2, has given a confessional statement in the negligent death case lodged over the drowning of ML Morning Bird and death of 34 people on June 29.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahjadi Tahmida recorded the statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as case investigation officer and Sub-Inspector Shahidul Alam of Sadarghat river police station produced Nasir before the court.
Meanwhile, the court of Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajib Ahsan on Sunday sent two engine drivers of Mayur-2, Shipon Hawlader and Shakil, to jail after scrapping their bail pleas.
According to the police, instead of master Abul Baser, Nasir was driving Mayur-2 when it rammed into the smaller size Morning Bird launch, drowning it instantly in the Buriganga River.
Police on July 15 arrested Nasir from a cargo ship named MV Rajib-2 in Bagerhat.
