2 women confess to killing businessman in Dhaka

Two women have confessed to killing a mobile banking retailer at Dakkhinkhan in Dhaka.

The victim was identified as Helal Uddin, a resident of the area.

The women -- Shahina Begum, 48, and her daughter Moni Sarkar, 18, -- confessed their part in the murder before a Dhaka court on June 19 under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure, detectives said.

Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the duo in Uttara area of the capital on June 18 in connection with the murder and recovered Tk33,000 from their possession.

DB police said they are looking for Charles Rupam Sarkar, 30, husband of Moni, the mastermind behind the killing.

Rupam and Helal were known to each other for various business purposes and Rupam owed Helal Tk60,000, said Md Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB (north division).

Rupam and his wife Moni planned to kill Helal so that Rupam would not have to return the money, the DB official said.

According to the plan, Rupam offered to sell a used photocopy machine to Helal and the latter went to Rupam’s house on June 14 morning for this purpose.

Moni then gave a cup of tea containing sedatives to Helal. He fell unconscious after drinking it and was strangled to death.

At night, the family dismembered the body into three parts and Rupam dumped those in water bodies at various places, the DB official said.

Later, local police recovered the body parts stashed into sacks.

The victim's elder brother, Md Hozayafa, identified the body and filed a murder case against unidentified people.

Alongside police, detectives also started investigation and found the clue of the murder after analyzing mobile phone calls of the victim and CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage in the area, DB police said.
