Dilu road burn victim Jannatul succumbs to injuries

Dilu road fire victim Jannatul had only two options: to succumb to the grief and agony of a mother losing her five year old son, or to stay strong to continue life with her husband who sustained 43% burns himself in the fire.

With the situation turning worse, Jannatul Ferdous, 40, has died. Perhaps she was missing her child badly or failed to cope with the pain and suffering she was enduring.

Jannatul Ferdous died yesterday morning at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, with 95% burns on her body.

Her child died on the spot when a deadly fire broke out in a five storey building in Dhaka's Dilu Road in Eskaton, around 4am on Thursday.

All the residents of the building were sleeping at that time.

However, Jannatul’s husband, AKM Shahidul Kirmany Rony, 40, is the lone survivor of the family.

Though Rony has escaped death for the time being, he has been put on life support.

At least three people died on the day of the fire incident, and nine others were injured. Of the deceased, two were children: AKM Rushdi, 5, and Afreen Jannat Juthi, 17.

Dr Sohel Mahmud, the head of Forensic Medicine department of Dhaka Medical College, said: "Two of the victims were burnt beyond recognition while the other victim Abdul died of smoke inhalation."

Besides that, jumping from the building to escape the fire, Jahangir Alam, 42, his wife Lal Banu, 35, and Shahabuddin Shihab, 35, sustained injuries.

Jahangir Alam, the father of the deceased teenage girl Juthi, said: "I broke my leg when I jumped from there to the adjacent building's roof. My wife broke her leg and back doing the same.”

The probe body formed by the Fire Service and Civil Defense, after primary investigation, suspect that the fire had its origin in the garage. However, the precise cause of the fire and from where it started is yet to be determined.
