Two suspected muggers have been killed in reported gunfight with police in Dhaka's Dumni Kali Mandir area.
The incident happened on the 300ft road under Khilkhet police station around 3am on Thursday.
The deceased are Najmul and Shahin alias Mota Shahin.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Biplob Bijoy Talukdar said the deceased were members of a mugging group called Gamchha Party and had been directly involved in four mugging related murder cases.
Two of the murder cases are investigated under Khilkhet police station, one with Hatirjheel police station and another with Vatara police station.
Earlier, police arrested three members of Gamchha Party -- Nur Islam, 40, Jalal, 32, and Abdullah Abu, 25 -- who confessed before the court about the four murders on a flyover and other murders. They confirmed the involvement of Najmul and Shahin in the murders, said the DC.
On Wednesday evening, police arrested another member of the group, Jibon, from Dhaka's Tongi area. Jibon confessed to police that he had provided CNG-run auto-rickshaws to the muggers and had given one to Najmul and Shahin.
Based on the information, Hatirjheel police set up several check-posts and conducted drives to finally find the duo on the 300ft road.
"When we tried to stop them, Najmul and Shahin opened fire at us, triggering a gunfight," the DC added.
The duo sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Later, the bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. Morgue sources said nobody had yet claimed their bodies.
Police also recovered a firearm used for mugging, and the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, mentioned in the confessional statement.
