Dhaka Customs House sues Biman over gold smuggling

Dhaka Customs House has filed a case against Biman Bangladesh Airlines over an incident related to the recovery of 640 gold bars, weighing 64kg, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The case was filed by Lokman Hossain, Dhaka Customs House assistant revenue officer, with the Airport police station Sunday morning.

A private company, Future Trading Corporation, was also named in the case.

Confirming the report to Dhaka Tribune, Airport police station Inspector (operation) Nur Mohammad, who is the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said: "We have started investigating the matter. 

"We are yet to arrest anyone. However, none have been accused specifically in the case."

Earlier on Saturday, customs officials recovered 640 gold bars, worth an estimated Tk32 crore, from a wooden box in the import cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10pm.

The big consignment of gold bars arrived at the airport on a flight from Singapore on Friday.

Sulaiman Saif, assistant commissioner at the preventive team of Dhaka Customs House, confirmed the seizure.
