Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested 24 fraudsters and rescued 101 people from their custody in a raid in Uttara, Dhaka.
The raid took place in Sector 10 of Uttara on Sunday night, RAB (legal and media wing) Senior Assistant Director Mizanur Rahman confirmed to Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
RAB 11 conducted the raid. A large number of documents were seized in the raid.
The fraudsters belong to a fake multi-level marketing (MLM) company named “Lifeway Bangladesh Private Limited.”
It was alleged that Lifeway Bangladesh Private Limited took Tk55,000 or more from each of the 101 rescued.
The company lured them with jobs at the company with a minimum salary of Tk16,000, a press release from RAB said.
In the name of training they (fraudsters) kept the victims captive and forced them to bring more members to join their organization,” the press release added.
If the victims managed to bring new members, they would supposedly get commissions from the fake MLM. Otherwise, they would be thrown out of the organization.
Those of the victims who protested were tortured, the press release added.
