Police have arrested a woman in connection with the death of her 12-year-old domestic help in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
The deceased, Jannati, hailed from Gabtali upazila in Bogra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur zone) Shibli Noman said police arrested Roksana Parveen in connection to the incident on Thursday.
"The victim's father, Janu Mollah, filed a murder case with Mohammadpur police station, and we are investigating the matter," he told Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier, police recovered Jannati’s body from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital after hearing the incident, and sent it for autopsy, said the police official.
After the autopsy, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College's Forensic Medicine Department head Dr Selim Reza told Dhaka Tribune that the body bore several injury marks, which are presumably from being hit with a metal object.
“The child might have died from internal bleeding,” he added.
Family members, and police said Jannati had been working as a domestic help at the house of Roksana Parveen, and Sayeed Ahmed for the last four years.
On Wednesday night, they took her to the hospital where the on-duty physician said the child was already dead.
However, Roksana claimed Jannati had epilepsy, and she used to get injured after collapsing to the ground from epilepsy attacks.
The victim's uncle Saju Mandal said Jannati worked at the house of Roksana's mother in Bogra before she came to Dhaka, and claimed that she did not have any illness.
Early on Thursday, Roksana asked the victim's family over mobile phone to come to Dhaka as Jannati was hospitalized, he said.
“We came to know about the news of her death on Thursday afternoon,” Saju added.
