Chhatra League leader allegedly assaults DU hall canteen manager

A Dhaka University hall unit Chhatra League leader has been accused of allegedly assaulting the canteen manager of his hall.

Ishtiak Ahmed Imon, deputy Information Technology affairs secretary of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman hall unit Chhatra League, allegedly assaulted hall canteen manager Shahabuddin with a cricket stump on Thursday.

Witnesses said Imon, a management department drop-out, who was named in media reports of being involved with admission forgery, also vandalized, and put the hall canteen under lock and key after beating the manager in Room No 322.

Victim Shahabuddin alleged that hall unit Chhatra League executive member Khalid Hasan Robin told him in the morning to meet Imon immediately at the room he stayed in.

"When I went to meet Imon at Room No 322 around 9am, I learnt that he was in the washroom. All of a sudden, he started beating me with a cricket stump after returning from the toilet. He appeared unnatural, somewhat like a drug addict," Shahabuddin claimed.

He furthered: "While I was trying to resist him, I got severe injury in my hands, and was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital."

Imon also vandalized an electronic table-fan of the canteen, hours after the first attack as part of expressing his anger. He locked the main doors of it as well, collecting keys forcibly from Shahabuddin when the canteen was at a houseful capacity, claimed the victim.

Imon could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts.

Hall Provost Zia Rahman said: "I am already notified of this, and found the incident to be true."

"A three-member probe body has been formed already, and they are given three days to file a report," he added.

Imon is a follower of Zia hall unit Chhatra League general secretary Abdullah Al Masud Lemon.

Lemon said: "It is very much unfortunate to do so, using the name of Chhatra League. We will take organizational measures immediately."

Meanwhile, the hall union also condemned the attack on the canteen manager through a press release, signed by Vice-President (VP) Shoriful Islam Shakil, and General Secretary (GS) Hasibul Hossen Santo.
