A schoolgirl of Manikganj has died of dengue on the way to a hospital in the capital.
The deceased, Rubaiya Akter, 11, a resident of Koyra village, was a sixth grader of Rupsha Wahed Ali High School in Shibaloy upazila.
After being infected with dengue fever on Wednesday, Rubaiya was admitted 250-bed District Hospital of Manikganj around 1:15pm on Friday, said Nargis Akter, senior staff nurse of the hospital.
She was then referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Nargis said.
Yunus Ali, maternal uncle of the deceased, said Rubaiya was taken to DMCH and then Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
Failing to find any seat in those hospitals, Rubaiya was being taken to a private hospital in Uttara, but she died on the way around 8:30pm, he said.
Her body was taken back to the village at the same night, Yunus said.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, headteacher of Rupsha Wahed Ali High School, said the namaz-e-janaza of Rubaiya was held at the school premises around 10am on Saturday.
After the funeral prayer, she was buried at the graveyard of her village, he added.
The Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room at Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed 57 deaths across Bangladesh from January 1 this year.
However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be around 139, so far.
In 2019, as many as 75,146 people have been hospitalized with dengue till Friday (September 6), according to the DGHS data.
Among those admitted, a total of 71,617 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
