The government has appointed Md Asaduzzaman Mia, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Security Affairs Cell under the Cabinet Division.
The Public Administration Ministry issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday.
Asaduzzaman will join at his new workplace on September 14, reads the gazette. The tenure of his contractual appointment will be three years from the date of joining, it adds.
Asaduzzaman was appointed as the DMP commissioner on January 7, 2015, and his tenure expired on August 13, but the government extended his tenure till September 13.
Born in Faridpur district in 1960, Asaduzzaman joined the Bangladesh Police as a Civil Service Cadre in 1985 and had served in several important units of the Bangladesh Police including the DIG of Khulna, Chittagong, Dhaka ranges and in the Highway range.
As the chief of National Security Affairs Cell, he will implement the decisions taken at meetings of the National Committee on Security Affairs, led by Prime Minister, officials said.
The government in March this year formed a 27 member National Committee on Security Affairs, led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The committee members include ministers of home, information, law, finance, foreign affairs, planning, industries, and commerce ministries.
It also includes the cabinet secretary, prime minister’s principal secretary and the chiefs of three forces.
Secretaries of different ministries and heads of Bangladesh Police, Armed Forces Division, National Security Intelligence, forces intelligence and Border Guard Bangladesh have also been included in the committee.
The job of the committee is to review the activities and problems relating to state security and defense affairs, evaluation and review of country's internal security affairs, direct the authorities concerned to take steps on state security and prepare recommendations for the cabinet.
