2 more die of dengue in Dhaka

The dengue outbreak has claimed two more lives in Dhaka.

A minor boy, suffering from dengue fever, has died while undergoing treatment at the Mitford Hospital.

He died around 10pm on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased is Sohrab, 10, a resident of Dhaka’s Keraniganj upazila.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman of the hospital said: "The boy was hospitalized on Monday after he had been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease." 

In another case, Faruk Khan, 22, from Shibchar of Madaripur was  under treatment at the Islami Bank Central Hospital in Dhaka.

He died around 8:30pm on Wednesday.

Faruk's father Babu told Dhaka Tribune: "Faruk was suffering from fever since Friday. Initially he was taken to Shibchar upazila health complex. The doctors referred him to Dhaka."

Meanwhile, Madaripur sadar hospital medical officer Dr Akhil Sarkar said:"So far, we have  treated 21 cases of dengue."

Sarkar explained that they were referring serious cases to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Civil surgeon Md Shafiqul Islam said the hospital authority is trying to raise awareness about dengue as much as possible. 

"We have asked doctors at the upazilas and unions to monitor the situation closely," he said. 

Dengue patients still on the rise

Between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 1,477 more dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country. 

Of these, 928 cases were reported in the capital alone. Two of them were suffering from dengue hemorrhagic or severe dengue.

This year, the viral disease has spread across the country with dengue cases reported from 61 out of 64 districts so far.

The government says 14 dengue patients have died between January and July, but the unofficial death count is much higher.
