Prime accused confesses to raping Wari girl

A Dhaka court on Monday recorded the confessional statement of the prime accused Harun-ur-Rashid in connection with the rape and murder of seven-year-old Samiya Afrin Saima in Wari.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sharafuzzaman Ansari recorded his statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, after Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Mohammad Arjun—also the investigating officer (IO) of the case—produced him before the court with a plea to record his statement.

The court sent him to jail after recording his statement.

On Sunday, DB arrested Harun-ur-Rashid from Dabordanga, Comilla around 11:30am.

The victim’s father Abdus Salam had filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act over the incident on Saturday.

The body of Saima, a nursery student of Silverdale Preparatory and Girls High School, was found with a rope around her neck, in an under-construction apartment above her family’s residence in Wari, Dhaka on Friday evening.

Dhaka Medical College Head of Forensic Medicine Department, Dr Sohel Mahmud, informed journalists that Saima's body had injuries on her genitals and lips, and DNA tests are being run to confirm whether she was raped.

On Saturday, a Dhaka court set July 24 for submission of the probe report in the case filed over the rape, and murder of the seven-year-old girl.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman issued the order after accepting the First Information Report (FIR) in the case.
