Jute mill workers’ 3rd day blockade ends in Dhaka

Jute mill workers’ demonstration for a third consecutive day, in Demra, Dhaka ends around 4pm on Wednesday.

They blocked roads demanding the payment of their outstanding wages.

Demra police station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Iqbal Hyder said: “They left the road around 4pm. But, we don’t know if they would block again tomorrow [Thursday].

The workers of Latif Bawani Jute Mills and Karim Jute Mills in Demra blocked the road near the Demra Staff Quarter area around 8am.

However, Demra police had tried several times to persuade them to end the blockade, but failed, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Iqbal Khandakar of the police station.

The blockade created huge traffic gridlock in the area causing immense suffering for the locals during the 2nd day of fasting month.

Some 1000 agitating workers of the two jute mills put up a barricade on the road around the same area 8am on Monday demanding their arrear and due wages.

Subsequently, on Tuesday around 1pm, the workers of the two jute mills ended their blockade.

Before that, they ended their Jatrabari blockade around 11am the same day.
