What are Ducsu’s objectives?

After a 28 year hiatus, Dhaka University students are finally gearing up elect their representatives in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) polls today.

Ducsu leaders were at the forefront of the Language and Independence movements, and also played a crucial role in ousting former military dictator HM Ershad from power in 1990.

The objectives and functions of Ducsu are:

Objectives

  • Foster cultural and intellectual co-operation between students of different halls of  the university
  • Ensure students obtain the maximum academic benefit from university life, as well as other advantages
  • Prepare students of the university for true citizenship and to create leaders
  • Foster cultural and intellectual co-operation between the students of the university and its constituent and affiliated colleges, as well as with students of sister universities and other educational institutions in Bangladesh and abroad


Functions

  • Maintain common rooms and provide indoor games, dailies, and periodicals for the use of members
  • Publish a journal at least once a year and such other bulletins, magazines or papers as decided by the Executive Committee and approved by the president
  • Arrange debates, lectures on subjects of general interest, and social gatherings
  • Arrange competitions in speeches, debates, recitations, essays and indoor games amongst the members of the union once per session. The competitions may be open to students of other universities and educational institutions
  • If possible, send representatives to inter university debates and educational conferences
  • Either send representatives to, or invite representatives of other universities for the purpose of debate competitions, annually 
  • Foster the spirit of social service among members of the union by encouraging social service activities and organising welfare lectures, demonstrations, exhibitions and maintaining, if possible, schools
  • Perform such functions as the Executive Committee may from time to time decide, subject to the approval of the president
