A fire has broken out at a slum beside the building of private television channel Deepto TV in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar area on Sunday.
The blaze started around 12:10pm during an eviction drive conducted by police in the area, said Kamrul Hasan, a duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
He also said the fire was doused at 12:45pm. "Three firefighting units rushed to the spot to douse the flame," he added.
Locals said that when the slum was being cleared, the residents saw a fire erupt during the hustle and bustle of being evicted.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon police station, Abdur Rashid said: “This slum was a hotpot for drug dealers. This land belongs to the railway department and we were ordered to clear the space.”
