15 families clamouring to adopt abandoned infant from DMCH

After media reports on an abandoned new born infant being rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), 15 families have expressed interest in adopting her with four having already filed for adoption with the court. The infant was admitted to DMCH on March 11 by Lipi Begum, who found her at Shah Ali area of Dhaka. Head of Department of Neonatology Professor Manisha Banerjee told the Dhaka Tribune the infant was making a fast recovery and will be sent to Choto Moni Shishu Nibash once she regains her health. “Once she is healthy, those who want to adopt her can go through the legal system and take her from there,” she added. Sources at Dhaka Juvenile Court said four families have already filed for her adoption including the woman who found her. Two expat families, one from Sweden and one from the United States, have also filed for her adoption. American resident Shamsul Alam said they were prepared to make a fixed deposit account in the infants name if the court wanted to make sure she would be well taken care of. Amid so much interest in her adoption, Juvenile Court Judge Ruhul Amin has set March 29 for the submission of financial statements of the families.
