Returning officer: Certain evening students allowed in Ducsu polls

A portion of students of evening and other master's courses will be allowed to take part in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election as candidates and voters, provided they meet two criteria.

Firstly, they have to be former undergraduate students of the university, and secondly, they will have to be under the age of 30 on the day of the declaration of the election schedule. This includes students doing a second master's degree at the university.

Chief Returning Officer for Ducsu polls Prof SM Mahfuzur Rahman clarified this to reporters on Monday.

“Only students of evening master's and other master's courses, except short evening courses, can take part in the election along with other eligible voters,” he said.

“Those students will have to have done their undergraduate studies at Dhaka University,” he added.

Students who got their undergraduate degrees from other universities and are now attending evening courses, including MBA, EMBA, MEd, professional, executive, special master’s, diploma, medical, PhD, DBA, language, certificate or equivalent courses; students who are currently working for any government, non-government or any local or international organizations; and students of DU-affiliated and constituent colleges are not eligible to be voters.

The authorities issued the amendments on January 29 at a meeting of the Syndicate, the university’s governing body, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman.

After the meeting, DU Registrar Md Enamuzzaman briefed reporters. However, questions still remained about the eligibility of evening students.

The elections are slated for March 11. The voting will take place from 8am to 2pm.
