3 pedestrians killed in Jatrabari bus accidents

Three people, including two men and a woman, have died in two bus accidents in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on Monday.

Two people died after being crushed between two buses of Trans Silva Ltd at the Jatrabari intersection near Rahman Plaza and Saddam Market. The deceased were identified as toy factory worker Selim, 22, and Turag Poribohon bus driver Jewel, 30.

According to police and locals, the two were crossing the road when they were caught between two buses of Trans Silva Ltd who were trying to overtake each other around 1:30pm.

Locals rushed the two to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where Selim was pronounced dead on arrival. Jewel died while undergoing treatment at around 5pm.

Selim’s mother Monowara Begum said they had come to Dhaka from their village for treatment, as she was suffering from a heart condition.

Confirming the matter, Jatrabari police station OC Kazi Wazed Ali said one of the buses were being driven by the driver’s assistant.

“The assistant has been detained, but the driver of the other bus managed to flee the scene. Both buses have been seized,” he added.

In another accident, Morsheda Begum, 50, died after being hit by a bus in the Saddam Market area around 5pm. Her son’s niece Tashfia, 8, was injured in the accident.

Morsheda Begum’s son Gias Uddin said the family were trying to cross the road when the accident occured.

He added that he rushed both his mother and niece to DMCH, where the duty doctor declared his mother dead. His niece received primary treatment.

Confirming the matter, DMCH Police out post Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Bachchu Mia said Morsheda’s body had been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy, and Jatrabari police station had been informed about the incident.
