Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia said multi-tier security measures have been taken to ensure the safe observance of Holy Ashura in Dhaka.
While talking to reporters on Tuesday, the DMP chief said: “There is no specific threat targeting Imambara of Hussaini Dalan.”
Asaduzzaman Mia also inspected the security arrangements in Old Dhaka, reports UNB.
Members of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), SWAT, bomb disposal units and dog squads will remain alert alongside other law enforcement agencies, including plainclothes police in these areas, he said.
Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), will be observed across Bangladesh on Friday.
The processions which will begin from Imambara which will be cordoned off by police and no one will be allowed to join the moving procession from outside, he said, adding that this initiative has been taken to prevent sabotage.
Lethal and sharp objects, like knives and swords, will not be allowed in the procession. Firecrackers will also remain banned during the event.
People will only be able to enter the Hussaini Dalan area only after a security screening involving hand metal detectors and archways, he added.
Meanwhile, the DMP commissioner requested that people cooperate with law enforcement and volunteer groups make the procession safe.
