A microbus plunged into the waters of Hatirjheel Lake after breaking the railing of a bridge adjacent to the Police Plaza Concord Shopping Mall in Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 6am on Saturday, Sub-Inspector of Hatirjheel police station Selim Shahriar said.
He said: "While passing the bridge, the microbus plunged into the lake breaking the railing as its driver lost control over the steering. The vehicle was going to Banasree from Mirpur.”
"The driver, Abul Kalam, managed to get out of the lake with the help of locals and police," the SI said adding. "Later, his relatives admitted him to a local hospital."
There was no one else in the car, Selim said.
The fire service officials are trying to recover the vehicle, the SI said. On information, the owner of the vehicle, Saiful Islam, went to the spot.
Initially, police are suspecting the driver lost control out of drowsiness, the SI said.
Officer-in-Charge of Hatirjheel police station Abu Md Fazlul Karim said the matter will be investigated.
