Minister Manju’s driver has no licence

Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju had an embarrassing moment on Thursday, when students stopped his vehicle in Dhanmondi and found that his driver had no licence.

The minister’s vehicle was passing through the area as protesting students were checking the validity of driver’s licences.

They stopped the vehicle and asked the driver to produce his licence, but he could not.

Minister Manju exited his vehicle and boarded another to leave the area. The incident was recorded on a mobile phone.

When contacted, Minister Manju told the Dhaka Tribune: “This is not my driver. He was given to me by the government.”

He said: “I and my other staff had asked him [driver] about his driving licence before getting on the car, and he had told us that he had it.

“Later, when the students asked him to show his licence, he failed to produce it.”

Students of schools and colleges have been out on Dhaka’s streets since Sunday after two college students were killed by a speeding bus.

Since then, they have been stopping vehicles on the streets and checking the driver’s licences.
