DU teachers for publication of quota reform gazette

Teachers of Dhaka University have come up with a five-point demand, including immediate publication of gazette regarding quota reformation.

Around 30 teachers of the university on Sunday brought out a protest procession under the banner “Teachers against Repression”, which marched from DU Central Library to National Shaheed Minar, the places where quota reform activists were repressed, and demanded a repression-free campus.

Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Dr Gitiara Nasreen placed the demands while speaking at National Shaheed Minar.

DU Professor Emeritus Sirajul Islam Chowdhury said: "We stand here against the repression over the quota reformists, which is very unfortunate, shameful and unbelievable.

"Most of the people of our society were unsatisfied with the 56% quota. As a result they had taken to the streets. The government had acknowledged it but made a delay in publishing the gazette. That has made our youth to move for demonstrations again."

The prominent professor condemned the beating of a Rajshahi University student with a hammer, and said: "The incidents of assaulting and harassing students, detention, harassment of their teacher and guardian while standing in for protests had never been seen before."

He expressed solidarity with all the students and their demands.

DU Law department’s Professor Asif Nazrul said: "Neither our constitution is cancelled nor martial law is proclaimed. But we do not practice our democratic right to protest along with our students.

"But while our students had moved for protests, they had to face attacks, assault, and sexual harassment. Hospitals, which are run by our tax money, denied providing them proper treatment."

Around 30-40 teachers of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Stanford University, Independent University along with hundreds of students took part in the protest.

The other demands include: punishment of attackers in all universities; withdrawal of false cases against the injured; arrangements of proper treatment to be ensured by the government; justice for female protesters against physical sexual harassment and over social media.
