Bangladesh Police yesterday launched its Victim Support Centre in Chittagong to provide legal assistance to victims of different social crimes.
The centre has been set up at the port city’s Double Mooring Police Station and will cover the entire Chittagong division.
Additional Inspector General (CID) Md Mokhlesur Rahman inaugurated the centre as chief guest while Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam presided over the function.
During the inauguration, he said Victim Support Centres are being introduced across the country in phases to provide assistance for the victims, especially women and children, and to grow awareness among the people.
“Senior officials have been asked to take action against subordinates who misbehave with women and children while discharging his or her duty at a police station,” he added.
Under Police Reform Project, the centre will be operated by total 24 trained female police personnel, led by an assistant commissioner, and will be assisted by 10 non-governmental organisations.
After the inauguration, police officials and citizens took part at a workshop held at the centre.
