Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will today inaugurate the country’s second safari park, named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Safari Park in Gazipur.
Built after a safari park in Thailand, the park – some 40km from the capital – is a centre for people, especially from Dhaka city who do not have many options for recreation, said Tapan Kumar Dey, a conservator of forest (wildlife circle) of the Forest Department.
Tapan is also the director of the project, which started on around 1,493.3 hectares of land in June 2010 at an estimated cost of Tk2.2bn.
The park has different components, including a core safari on 495.7ha land, a safari kingdom on 229ha, a biodiversity park on 331.8ha and an extensive Asian safari on 311.2ha.
The country’s first safari park – Dulahazra Safari Park in Cox’s Bazar – was established in 1999.
The park covers 905.28ha land.
