Work is underway to develop an alternative road linking the Purbachal 300-foot road with Aftabnagar in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the capital, officials said on Friday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner (Acting) Md Sarwar inspected the progress of the project around 4pm during a visit to the site, accompanied by officials from relevant agencies.
During the inspection, he said the initiative, once completed, would significantly ease long-standing congestion on the Kuril–Rampura corridor and improve mobility for city residents.
“All concerned agencies are working in coordination to complete the development within the planned timeframe,” he said.
According to the proposed plan, authorities are assessing the feasibility of connecting the route through internal roads in L Block of Bashundhara Residential Area, extending from the 300-foot road via areas adjacent to United International University, Swadesh Property, Aftabnagar and Banasree.
Officials said the alternative corridor is expected to distribute traffic across multiple routes, easing pressure on existing roads and improving overall traffic management. The route is also expected to facilitate faster movement of emergency services, including ambulances, fire service vehicles and law enforcement.
However, they added that several challenges remain, including land ownership issues, road widening requirements, security arrangements, traffic signage installation and other infrastructure needs. Authorities also said the safety and interests of residents in adjoining residential areas are being taken into account.
Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, RAJUK Chairman Md Riazul Islam, and DMP Deputy Commissioner (Traffic-Gulshan) Md Mizanur Rahman were among those present during the inspection.
If implemented, the alternative road is expected to play a significant role in easing traffic congestion in the eastern part of Dhaka.
