Rampal: Manmohan for ‘highest’ environmental standards

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called upon the authorities of the Rampal project to observe the highest environmental standards in its execution as the Sunderbans are a common heritage of both Bangladesh and India.

The Indian premier made the statement in his speech on the inauguration of the India-Bangladesh Grid interconnection at Bheramara of Kushtia through video conference from New Delhi.

Manmohan thanked his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina for inviting him to join the programme, according to the Indian prime minister’s official website.

“The initiative we took during your [Sheikh Hasina] historic visit to India in January 2010 is being realised today. The transmission line and the HVDC station in Bheramara provide a safe and reliable interconnection of the power grids of our two countries,” said Manmohan.

He said the inauguration represents an important milestone in connecting the two countries and the broader region through a growing web of cross-border energy links and trade.
