Detective Branch to probe college teacher Kaberi murder

The Detective Branch of police will investigate the murder of college teacher Krishna Kaberi Bishwas, wife of a BRTA deputy director, who was killed on March 30 at their flat in Mohammadpur.

The case was transferred to the DB police from Mohammadpur police yesterday, Wahidul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, said.

In the night of March 30, the killer entered the flat of BRTA Deputy Director Sitangshu Shekhar Bishwas to greet the latter on his belated birthday. But drugging him with contaminated juice, Jahirul hit his head with a hammer.

As Kaberi, 36, wanted to save her husband, the killer hacked her with a kitchen sickle and later set her on fire. She died the following day. Their two daughters were also injured in the attack.

Sitangshu’s brother Sudhangshu Shekhar Biswas filed the murder case with Mohammadpur police on Tuesday, naming KM Jahirul Islam Palash as the lone accused.

According to the police, Jahirul – who works as manager of Gulshan branch at Hazi Ahmed Brothers Securities’ – was known to the family. Investigators suspect that share market investment might be behind the attack.

On Wednesday, Investigation Officer of the case Sub-Inspector Mahbubur Rahman of Mohammadpur police said they could not trace Jahirul as the accused and his family members had kept their mobile phones off.

Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Azizul Haque also said there was no progress in the case.

Krishna’s family members yesterday said the official phone number of Jahirul had been found switched on. But despite repeated attempts, he did not pick up the phone.

His personal number, provided by the family of the victim, was found switched off.

Asked whether they were tracking the phones of Jahirul, SI Mahbubur said the phone had been diverted to another number. He said the food items Jahirul had taken to the flat were to sent to the Criminal Investigation Department for forensic tests.

The injured, now undergoing treatment at Metropolitan Medical Centre in the capital, were told about the death of Kaberi on Friday night. She was cremated yesterday at Sitangshu’s village home in Baliakandi of Rajbari.
