Teen-aged girl among three detained for cyber fraud

RAB yesterday arrested three persons, including a girl, for their involvement in what was described as cyber fraud.

Afsana, 19, Tanvir Hossain, 23, and Rana Raihan, 36, were detained from the capital’s Mohammadpur, Elephant Road and Green Road areas.

Their arrests came after Sohel Chowdhury Prince, a computer engineering student, put up an ad online to sell his laptop but had the female buyer, Afsana, fleeing with it without paying money after the two met for the trade on March 10.

“She convinced me to go to her office in the capital’s Panthapath area to sell my laptop. I went there and came to understand that she was not involved with the office in any way but it was too late and she took away the laptop without paying for it,” Sohel recalled at the RAB 2 office in Agargaon yesterday.

“The two men were her accomplices. The employees of the office did not know either of the three,” he added.

`Addressing a press briefing at the Agargaon office at noon, RAB 2 Commanding Officer Lt Col SM Masud Rana said the detainees had been deceiving people this way for 10-12 months.

He said it was not certain how many groups are involved in such deceptive measures.

“They contact sellers who advertise products on the internet and ask them to come to a specific location. The places usually include offices, shopping malls and even law chambers.

“When the seller arrives, they deceive him and the office staff at the same time before fleeing with the product without paying money,” added Masud.
