Investigators suspect that share market investment might be behind Monday’s attack on Sitangshu Shekhar Bishwas, a BRTA deputy director, that resulted in the death of his wife and injuries to three others including Sitangshu.
Monirul Islam, the DMP joint commissioner, told the Dhaka Tribune that they were yet to confirm motive behind the attack. Primarily, it seems that it might be done centring Sitangshu’s investment in a brokerage house.
The murderer, KM Jahirul Islam alias Palash, was familiar to the family. He works as manager of Hazi Ahmed Brothers Securities’ Gulshan branch.
However, family members on Tuesday identified the attacker as Zakir Hossain though his designation and workplace are same.
The way Palash attacked Sitangshu and other members of the family as they tried to save him, it seems that he is non-professional and that the attack may not be pre-planned, police say adding that there could be others involved in the planning of the attack.
Sitangshu’s brother Sudhangshu Shekhar Biswas filed a murder case with Mohammadpur police on Tuesday night naming Palash.
The killer first hit Sitangshu on his head with a hammer. As his wife college teacher Krishna Kaberi Bishwas, 36, came to the living room with a boti, a unique kitchen sickle, the killer snatched it and hacked her on the head. She was later set on fire. Krishna succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader visited Sitangshu and his two daughters undergoing treatment at Dhaka Metropolitan Hospital yesterday noon. He asked the hospital authorities to ensure their better treatment and ordered the authorities concerned to arrest the attacker.
The condition of Sitangshu’s two daughters – Shruti and Adri – was improving, doctors said.
Since Sitangshu’s injury was severe, his family members asked BRTA Chairman Nazrul Islam, who visited the victims, to send him abroad for better treatment. Nazrul then spoke to the hospital authorities and physicians.
Later the family members agreed that Sitangshu be operated at the same hospital under neurosurgery Professor Dr Mohammad Afzal Hossain.
