Robber killed in Jhenaidah ‘shootout’ with police

A suspected robber has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Shalikha crossing area under Kaliganj upazila of the district.

The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hossain, 30, son of Abul Hossain of Arpara village under the upazila.

Kaliganj OC Anwar Hossain said being informed that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery by placing logs on the Kaliganj-Mallikpur road at 2am on Saturday, a team of police conducted a drive in the area.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Iqbal's cohorts opened fire on them. The law enforcers also fired back that triggered gunfight between them.

Iqbql was caught in the line of fire and injured critically while his associates managed to flee the spot.

He was sent to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where attending doctors declared him dead.

The police recovered a revolver, three rounds of ammunitions and a sword from the scene.

He was wanted at least eight cases including robbery, snatching with Kaliganj and Jhenaidah Sadar policve stations in Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Jesssore Sadar and Bagherpara in Jessore and Magura Sadar and Salikha upazilas in Magura.

A case was filed with Kaliganj police in this connection. The body was sent to Jhenaidah general hospital morgue for autopsy, the police official said.
