Hasan Ali Sana, a notorious robber, was allegedly killed in a gunfight with the police in Hangsharajer Char under Koyra upazila of Khulna. Police recovered four firearms, 10 rounds of bullets and six bullet shells from the scene. Police said Hasan had been a deputy of Amir Hossain Ranga, leader of “Ranga bahini” (a robber gang named after him) who plunder the Sundarbans.
Police detained Hasan from Shyamnagar, Satkhira on Wednesday night. He was interrogated in connection with the kidnapping of a shrimp merchant from Dakop, Khulna.
He gave up information regarding firearms that were later recovered during the interrogation.
Police raided the specified spot at around 3am where other members of Hasan’s gang ambushed them. The police said they took cover and fought back.
At one point of gunfight that continued for almost two hours, Hasan fled police custody.
Police found Hasan’s bullet riddled body once the robbers retreated.
Police sent the body to the Khulna Medical College for autopsy after filing an inquest report.
Hasan had numerous cases filed against him under Koyra and Dakop police stations.
Koyra OC Harendranath Sircar informed that 24 rounds of bullets were exchanged during the encounter. Police members SI Mithun Kumar Das and Constables Abul and Mizan were injured in the exchange and are now receiving medical attention in Jaigirmahal Hospital, Koyra.
Four cases were lodged under Koyra, and two others under Dakop against the deceased.
On January 12, the leader of the gang, Amir Hossain Ranga, was also killed in a gunfight with the police at Kumarkhali Char near the Sundarbans. Police had also recovered three firearms and a lot of ammunition following that encounter.
