A man has hacked and slaughtered his sister-in-law over family dispute in the city's Khulshi area on Wednesday morning.
The victim, Gulzar Begum Ruma, 37, wife of poultry trader Mohammad Younus, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Quoting family members and the locals, Khulshi police station Inspector (Investigation) Sukanta Chakrabarty told the Dhaka Tribune: “Ruma’s brother-in-law Yakub, 45, entered inside her house in the morning immediately after her husband left it. He swooped on Ruma with sharp weapon and started hacking her.”
“At one stage, he slaughtered Ruma and fled the spot.”
The locals rescued the victim and took her to the CMCH, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead, said the police.
Ruma’s brother Golam Morshed said: “Younus and Yakub had a dispute over constructing a building. Their relation got worsen when Yunus's son Babar got married with his girlfriend without the consent of the family members.”
“The family members were upset with the decision but later they agreed to accept Babar's wife, making Yakub angry.”
“Yakub earlier threatened to kill everyone if the family members accept Babar's wife,” said Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Panchlaish Circle) Dipak Jyoti Khisah.
“The police are trying to capture the murderer.”
