A four-year-old girl was hospitalised hours after she was raped allegedly by a neighbour in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Thursday evening.
The accused, Milon Hossain, was also admitted to a hospital as he took poison.
The father of the girl claimed that 22-year-old Milon of Nawlamari village lured the victim outside and took her to his house where he violated her.
Milon, son of Buroichand Mia, was at a loss when the incident was revealed and he poisoned himself. However, the amount of the poison was small, though he pretended that its effect was intense.
Milon’s family took him to Harinakundu Hospital in Jhenaidah, but doctors told him to return home as they did not find any poison in his stomach.
Police later detained him around 9pm but he told them he was feeling really unwell due to the poison. Law enforcement officials then took him to Hardi Hospital in the upazila.
Deputy Inspector of Alamdanga police station Nurul Islam said no written complaint had been lodged by the victim’s family.
“An oral complaint has been made, which is why Milon is being treated at the hospital under police protection,” he said, adding that actions would be taken if a written complaint was filed.
