One picket has died, and four others were arrested after a gunfight with police Saturday night at Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong district.
The deceased is Arif, 24, from Shekherhat village in Sitakundu upazila.
Rubel, 20, a CNG autorickshaw driver, Sohel, 22, Nur Hadis, 22, and Parvez, 18, were injured in the gunfight.
Sub Inspector Jahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH police outpost, confirmed the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune around 11:50pm.
Assistant Superintendent of police of Sitakunda Model police station circle, Saiful Islam, said the arrested are activists of the BNP led 20-party alliance.
ASP Saiful said 10-12 miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a police vehicle in the Nunachora area of the upazila around 9:15 that night.
Police immediately conducted a special drive in the area to arrest the criminals and chased them, he added.
At one stage, they opened fire at police, who also fired back at them, said ASP Saiful.
After the gunfight, police arrested five and also recovered two petrol bombs, one LG, 10 crude bombs, and three rounds of bullets from them, the official said.
"The injured were admitted to Sitakunda upazila health complex, and later referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for being in critical condition," Muhammad Nur, on-duty doctor at Sitakunda upazila health complex, said to the Dhaka Tribune.
